Reading the Medina

The logic behind the labyrinth

Not chaos — a system

The medina appears chaotic to first-time visitors: narrow alleys branching unpredictably, dead ends, streets that change character every 50 meters. But it follows a logic shaped by centuries of social and economic organization. Understanding that logic transforms the experience from disorientation to reading.

The organizational structure

Islamic medinas are organized around three centers: the Friday mosque (jami), the main market street (qaysariyya), and the hammam. All other streets radiate from or connect to these. Trades were historically organized into dedicated streets: the copper souks, the leather souks, the spice souks. Each guild had its own khan (caravanserai) for storing goods.

The riad: interior turned outward

Traditional Marrakchi homes are riads — courtyard houses with high blank exterior walls and all life oriented inward around a central garden. This reflects both climate (shade from the sun) and social values (privacy for family life). The exterior shows nothing; the interior can be extraordinary.
